Developing a Good Oral Care Routine

Here's how to devise a foolproof oral care regimen for a healthy smile.

When you think about keeping your smile clean and healthy what’s the first thing that comes to mind? It’s probably brushing, right? However, beyond brushing, there is so much more you can and should be doing to keep your teeth healthy, including turning to our Williamsburg, VA, dentist Dr. Nancy Schumann for dental cleanings.

When it comes to creating an oral care routine that works best for you and your health here are some things to keep in mind,

Know Your Health Needs

This is by far the most important, as certain factors such as pregnancy, menopause, heart disease and diabetes can all have an impact on the health of your teeth and gums. Talk with your Williamsburg, VA, dentist during your next dental cleaning to discuss how your health impacts your oral health so you can devise a plan to reduce risks and to stay healthy.

Knowing your health status will allow us to provide you with the best care possible. Of course, everyone needs to get regular dental cleanings, no matter how healthy they are, every six months so don’t forget to also visit your dentist.

Create Your Routine

A daily routine should consist of brushing twice a day and flossing once a day. You should also use mouthwash after brushing and flossing to kill any bacteria that might be left. Always use a fluoridated toothpaste (look for toothpaste with the ADA approval seal) and again, if you are pregnant or have certain chronic diseases such as diabetes it’s important that you talk with your dentists about additional measures you may need to take to keep your teeth and gums healthy.

Maintain a Healthy Diet

What you eat impacts your mouth as much as the rest of you; therefore, if you have a diet that is high in sugar and starches this can increase your risk for cavities and other issues down the line. The best thing you can do for the health of your smile is to eat a balanced diet that is low in starches such as white breads and pastas, as well as sugar (this even means things like fruit juice, which may have a ton of added sugar). Limiting sweets and reducing how much you snack can have a profound impact on your teeth.
